Continuing Medical Education

At Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, continuing medical education (CME) is an annual service. Physicians and allied health professionals utilize CME courses to maintain medical competence and to incorporate new knowledge with the ultimate goal of improving quality medical care for their patients and their communities. Our experienced CME committee arranges and coordinates for a wide variety of courses in cooperation with our medical staff.

For the past 25 years Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center has been accredited by a recognized state medical society. On June 14, 2013, the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) reaccredited Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. The next reaccreditation will take place in 2017.

Currently, Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center is 1 of 38 state accredited providers in New York State. There are an additional 38 ACCME accredited CME providers in New York State.

The Mission of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program at Good Samaritan Hospital is to provide an evidence-based, high quality, relevant, accessible and cost-effective educational resource.  With the aim of assuring clinical excellence the program’s goal is to continually improve medical care through the maintenance, augmentation, and updating of medical knowledge, skills, awareness of practice trends, and personal attitudes. The program’s offerings would complement or add to the existing knowledge of the targeted audiences; help improve professional competency and patient outcomes; help integrate any newly acquired skills and information into practices and care plans; and to assess or determine the impact of CME activities.

Content Area
The CME Program will attempt to provide varied educational activities relevant to the practices of recognized medical and health care disciplines. The activities can include forums and presentations related to the awareness of current practice and treatment trends; the awareness of relevant and applicable therapeutic modalities; information on the management of patients with and patient care for various medical conditions; ethical and legal issues; Corporate Responsibility; Quality Improvement; Risk Management and Liability Risk Reduction; and practice and care-centered technological innovations and applications.

Target Audience
All hospital clinical departments are invited and encouraged to present CME Committee-approved programs and sessions for the hospital’s licensed medical and allied health staffs and health professionals in Rockland County and surrounding counties in New York and New Jersey. Some programs will have a broad-based appeal and might involve more than one specialty or department. Other programs are directed to specialists or sub-specialists: physicians, physician assistants, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAS), Nurse Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, and Pharmacists.

Type of Activities
CME Program activities can include: lectures, panel discussions, themed workshops, full-day symposia, grand rounds, and bedside teaching rounds. The targeted audience dictates the specific structure and format of each activity to insure a relevant fit between the activities’ content and the expected instructional outcome. This is especially significant when a program is multidisciplinary.

Expected Outcome
The primary importance of any activity sponsored by the CME Program is to help influence changes in clinical and personal performance with the aim of insuring improved patient care, patient outcomes and clinical excellence. The expectation is that the information and knowledge gained through the activities will be applied, where relevant, to practice and care to insure those outcomes. It is expected that participants will be able to report in the program evaluation an increased confidence in meeting clinical challenges; be able to report enhanced or reinforced knowledge; be encouraged to commit to changing behavior by the application of newly acquired practice strategies; and be able to self-report demonstrated competence or effective use of new and specific or specialized skills.

Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center 's commitment to continuing medical education can be seen in its dedication of staff and resources to this effort. In addition to a dedicated continuing medical education staff, the Medical Center has defined staff with continuing medical education responsibilities in most of its departments. The Committee is chaired by the Dr. Harry Baldinger.

CME Committee Roles and Responsibilities
The CME Committee meets 6 times a year. The CME Executive Committee meets on an as needed basis. The members provide oversight to ensure that the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for CME meets its mission (goals) and remains compliant with the Medical Society of the State of New York Accreditation Criteria. The members also provide advice on the financial model for CME and on the prioritization of Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for CME activities.
Annually, the committee evaluates the overall CME Program, and in doing so identifies both strengths and opportunities for improvement within the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for CME.

CME helps health professionals solve real world problems, advance team-based care, and achieve their institutions' goals. CME activities cover the full range of topics important to the professional development of health care practitioners - from the latest breakthroughs in medical research to communication skills.

Health care professionals can use accredited CME to meet requirements for licensure, certification, credentialing, membership in professional societies, and other professional privileges.

In order to certify educational activities an organization must be an accredited CME provider. Organizations may be accredited by either the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or a recognized state medical society.

Please follow these steps to develop and execute quality CME activities. Thank you.

Step 1: To be completed by the planner.

Instructions - The completed form must be received by the Medical Staff Office 3 months prior to the proposed CME activity. This form may be (1) completed and submitted electronically here or (2) can be printed out, completed by hand, and faxed to (845) 368-5938.

Step 2: Committee Review

The CME Committee will review the completed form and either approve or reject the proposed CME activity. The CME program coordinator will then notify the planner of the status along with any relevant corrections and/or revisions if the activity is not approved.

*The CME Committee grants one (1) AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ per one (1) hour.

Step 2A: CME Clinical Content Validation

  • The planner contacts the speaker and requests a copy of the materials to be sure it is relevant, current and in the accepted range of medical treatment options.
  • The planner reviews the presentation and reports to the CME Committee that the lecture meets the criteria.
  • The CME Coordinator keeps a copy of the presentation on file

Step 3: To be completed by the speaker.

The “Speaker” must complete the following forms:

The above forms MUST be submitted to the CME Coordinator at least 10 business days prior to the presentation.

Step 4: Important ACCME Guidelines

Marketing Materials

The planner and speaker must adhere to the following NYS ACCME Guidelines.

  • During an educational presentation a sponsor cannot be mentioned and product-promotion material or product-specific advertisement of any type is prohibited.
  • Disclosures never include the use of a corporate logo, trade name or a product-group message of an ACCME – defined commercial interest.
  • A speaker must disclose all relevant financial relationships prior to the educational activity and also disclose verbally to participants at the CME activity.
  • Resolution of Conflict of Interest, Disclosure Statement/Policy and Relevant Financial Disclosure correspondence submitted to the Medical Staff Office prior to the presentation is disclosed to all participants prior to the activity.

All marketing materials must be reviewed and approved by the CME Coordinator prior to distribution.

Step 5: To be completed by the attendees.

The following evaluation form is completed by all attendees and an attendance sheet will be supplied by the CME Coordinator.

Step 6: Submit evaluations and attendance sheet.

The evaluation form and attendance sheet must be submitted to the CME Coordinator for appropriate credit.
