Westchester Medical Center Health Network and Bon Secours Charity Health System Announce Transformative Plans for Healthcare in Port Jervis

Comprehensive, $40+ million Project Includes Significant Bon Secours Community Hospital Renovation

PORT JERVIS, NY (September 6, 2016) – The Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), along with the Bon Secours Charity Health System, today announced an investment of $40+ million in Bon Secours Community Hospital and the Port Jervis area that is expected to transform healthcare delivery in the region, with an expanded emergency room, upgraded imaging center and the conversion of 36 medical/surgical rooms from semi-private to private for increased patient comfort and privacy.  Additionally, working with local partners, Bon Secours Community Hospital will become the centerpiece of a “medical village” that will bring together services key in nurturing a healthier community.

“Today’s announcement is a significant step in fulfilling our promise to provide the very best care to our neighbors in Port Jervis and the surrounding communities as close to their homes as possible,” said Michael D. Israel, President and CEO, Westchester Medical Center Health Network.  “Our aim is to foster a healthier community, which is why our transformative include acute care enhancements to the hospital, as well as preventative care options for local residents through wellness programs developed by the hospital and in collaboration with local partners.  WMCHealth is committing the resources necessary to making this project a reality for the Port Jervis community today and for its future.”

“With this extensive project, we are proud to begin the process of transforming the health outcomes of Port Jervis residents as well as those from nearby areas in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania,” said Mary P. Leahy, MD, CEO of Bon Secours Charity Health System.  “By providing enhanced inpatient, outpatient and community care services, the Bon Secours Community Hospital project is an innovative way of ‘creating health’ in the region. An investment in a healthy community translates into a reduction in preventable hospitalizations, which results in lower health care costs.

“Together with our valuable community partners, we look forward to advancing care for our community and making it stronger, more vital and economically sound,” Dr. Leahy added.

Elements of the Bon Secours Community Hospital renovation plan include, but are not limited to, an expanded emergency department with more than 10,000 square feet of space along with a new entrance and waiting area; an upgraded imaging suite with advanced equipment supplied by Philips, the world-leading technology partner of WMCHealth;  the conversion of 36 semi-private rooms in the hospital’s medical/surgical unit into private rooms; a newly-designed bariatric center; and a centrally-located pharmacy.

Additionally, Bon Secours Community Hospital will partner with local organizations such as Cornerstone Care and the Orange County Department of Mental Health Services, to offer dental, women’s health, pediatrics, behavioral health and other services.  This is all part of the “medical village” concept where much-needed care options and healthy lifestyle information will be accessible to area residents in a convenient location.  With its planned wellness center offering monitoring services, exercise classes, nutrition education, healthy cooking workshops and more, Bon Secours Community Hospital will be the hub of the “village” that also will be populated with community partners offering similar healthcare services in nearby locations.

After city and New York State approvals, the Bon Secours Community Hospital project is targeted to begin in the spring of 2017 with completion expected in 2019.  This initiative, which was made possible by a $24.5 million grant from the State of New York’s Capital Restructuring Financing Program, will revitalize and promote the well-being of the community.
