faq’s about donating blood

Is donating blood safe?
Donating blood is a safe process. Needles and bags used to collect blood are used only once and then discarded, making spread of infection to the donor not possible.

Am I eligible to donate?
To donate, you must be in good general health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. If over 75 years of age, you must have a physician's consent.

How long does it take?
The whole process takes under an hour. It starts with registration, a health history and a miniphysical. Then comes the actual donation, which usually takes less than 10-12 minutes. Afterward, you will be asked to spend a few minutes relaxing where you can have a light refreshment before returning to your normal activities.

5 reasons to give blood

  • Blood donation helps countless people. We collect blood so it can provide blood and blood components to accident and trauma victims, surgical patients, cancer patients, hemophiliacs, patients with anemia and many more.

  • Blood is desperately needed. There is a continual need for blood donations each year, over 1 million people in the United States donate, but that’s still not enough to meet demand. Any amount you can donate, any time, will help tremendously.

  • There is no substitute for blood. We only use human blood, so it’s critical that we process enough to meet the needs of patients whose lives depend on blood products every day.

  • A single donation can go a long way. Because blood can be broken down into various components, your gift of just one unit can save the life of more than one person.

  • We need you! If you’re a healthy person and want to help those who are sick and less fortunate, please consider donating blood today. You can even join our Lifesaver Club, where you can earn lots of giveaways and prizes for donating. We applaud all our donors for their commitment to life and ask you to join their effort.
